Food Safety

Food safety affects us all: consumers, businesses and governments. At Mars, we also believe food safety is fundamental to food security — which is defined by the Food and Agriculture Organization as when all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food. This cannot be tackled by any single entity, and over the past few years, we have advocated a new approach to food safety globally, one rooted in knowledge sharing and collaboration.

At Mars we have multiple global food safety partnerships with UN Agencies, foundations, universities, governments, as well as collaborations with organizations, such as the World Food Programme (WFP), the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), and the Partnership for Aflatoxin Control in Africa (PACA).

The Global Food Safety Center is a research facility based in Huairou, China that acts as a global and virtual hub for food safety research, knowledge sharing and education.

Our Global Food Safety Center (GFSC), which opened in September 2015, is based in Huairou, China. It is the next milestone in decades of food safety research. The aim is to increase understanding and raise food safety standards on a global scale through research, training and knowledge sharing. Our center is one of the first facilities of its kind for the region and industry to conduct pre-competitive food safety research and training.

Research areas at the center include: mycotoxin management, rapid detection and identification of foodborne pathogens, raw material and product authenticity, applied and operational food safety management and transforming food safety through data integration.


Our consumers play a vital role in quality and food safety. Listening to the voice of our consumers gives us valuable feedback and is key part of how we manage quality at food safety at Mars.
