Recognition and Respect

Women play a powerful role in our history and current leadership, and the evidence is clear that women’s advancement and empowerment are crucial to our business and our society.

While women provide two-thirds of the world's working hours and produce half of the world's food, they earn only 10% of the world's income and own less than one percent of the world's property.

As part of our Sustainable in a Generation Plan, our goal is to unlock opportunities for women in our workplaces, marketplaces and supply chain.

In the workplace, companies with higher numbers of women board members and more women in senior leadership exhibit better performance.

In the marketplace, more than 70% of brand purchasing decisions are made by women, 75% of women identify
themselves as the primary shopper for their household, and women create and control more than a quarter of
the world’s wealth, at $20 trillion.

In supply chains, women make essential contributions to agriculture, making up 43% of the agricultural labor force
globally and 50% in Sub-Saharan Africa, while also engaging in unpaid work caring for the family.


Our Action Plan to Unlock Opportunities for Women

We have joined more than 275 CEOs in a national movement to advance workplace inclusion and diversity by signing on to the CEO Action for Diversity and Inclusion.

What Mars Will Do in Our Workplace

Our senior leadership is focused on advancing diversity and inclusion across our business, and is focusing first on women’s advancement as part of this journey. Our top leadership is now participating in inclusive leadership training to identify ways to address the biases and cultural barriers that can limit our Associates from reaching their full potential. In particular, we’re looking at women’s representation in roles where they’ve historically been underrepresented. Leaning into potential barriers, mentoring high-potential women, and ensuring that all interview panels include women are just a few steps we’re taking to advance women in those roles.

What Mars Will Do in the Marketplace

We're piloting micro-distributor and micro-retailer training programs as a way of empowering women entrepreneurs in emerging markets across Africa and Asia. The objective of these programs is to increase the incomes of the entrepreneurs and drive sales and profits for the business.

For example, Projects Maua and Bloom are pilot initiatives of our businesses in Kenya and the Philippines that provide training to men and women entrepreneurs as they sell our products to low-income consumers in dense, urban areas. We have also signed on to The Unstereotype Alliance, co-convened by UN Women and Unilever. This Alliance is tackling unhelpful and harmful gender stereotypes in advertising.

What Mars Will Do in Our Supply Chains

We recognize the connections between poverty, human rights and women’s empowerment. So, we’re prioritizing action and collaboration in our cocoa, rice and mint supply chains where we have the greatest potential to drive impact, even though we don’t control those supply chains. But that’s just the start. We’ll use what we learn in these supply chains to make progress in others.
